“Omamas” boost education in Slovakia – Women for a better society

Education does not start at the age of six. Children need to be prepared for school by developing skills and knowledge from early on. Our project is all about catching the most vulnerable ones as early as possible, so they do not fall through the educational grid.

And the "Omama"-women are the key to that. Coming themselves from the same communities and therefore a very disadvantaged minority background, they get trained by professional female pedagogues so they can teach the underserved children everything they need to know to get their education going. To compensate what they lack because of their upbringing in extreme poverty: Be it language and motor skills or their general receptiveness – and much, much more.

As we are empowering these women, they change their own lives and those of the children. Investing in women is the most effective means of sustainable development in society and to eradicate poverty in extremely poor communities through education. Women are more likely to reinvest what they have into the education and well-being of children and their families. In other words, when you boost the education and power of women, they boost the conditions around them.

In our video, project manager Laura Portik explains how women empower disadvantaged women to teach underdeveloped children so they can improve their communities.
